1934 Graham Sutherland sugar pot Harrods Art in Industry Exhibition
1934 Graham Sutherland sugar pot Harrods Art in Industry Exhibition Foley china.
One of the designs by Graham Sutherland for the 1934 Harrods and Art in Industry 'Modern Art for the Table' exhibition. Foley China and Clarice Cliff were asked to produce a range of tableware for the exhibition and notable artists of the day including Laura Knight, Duncan Grant, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, as well as Graham Sutherland, were invited to submit designs.
This covered sugar bowl stands around 4" high, with a c.2.75" diameter base. Decorated with a transfer print of stars and squiggles it was hand-finished with green spots and a pink band. Although it displays well it has some serious issues: At some point the entire base has broken off, and been reaffixed with superglue. This is mostly evident inside, but shows as a hairline all around the base, just above the foot. There is also a short hairline to the lid and a tiny chip under the knob, as indicated with red arrows on the photos.
